Planning an Away Race Weekend

Planning an Away Race Weekend

An away race moves the familiar rhythm of skiing into an unfamiliar place. The athlete still needs to arrive ready to learn and race, but the family now has a different meeting point, lodging arrangements, and event instructions to manage. A shared plan helps prevent those details from taking over the weekend.

For Snow Summit Race Team families traveling from Snow Summit, start with the race calendar and your coach’s guidance about participation. Do not assume that every listed event applies to every athlete.

Settle registration and lift access

For most races, families create an account at AdminSkiRacing.com and purchase the athlete’s entry there. Follow the organizer’s instructions and check deadlines. A current US Ski & Snowboard membership and ID are required for USSS races, with the appropriate competition license.

Lift tickets are purchased separately from race entry. Check whether the athlete’s existing pass covers the resort on the relevant dates. Parents who ski or ride the lift to watch also need valid access. Confirm these details before buying additional tickets.

Decide how your family will travel

When SSRT offers team travel, the club arranges transportation and lodging at the racer’s household’s expense. Families traveling independently arrange their own transportation and accommodation. Clarify which arrangement you are using with the coach before booking.

Think through the morning as well as the journey. Where will equipment be stored? How long will it take to reach the meeting point? Who will help a younger athlete get ready? Making those decisions in advance leaves fewer moving parts on race day.

Pack for more than the race run

Use the program’s equipment requirements as your starting point. Add dry clothing, spare gloves, food, water, and the items your child relies on between activities. Have the athlete check the equipment with you so they know what is in the bag.

Keep registration information and meeting instructions accessible. Label gear and use a consistent place for small items in the lodging so they do not disappear between days.

Keep checking for changes

Away races may be canceled or rescheduled. For canceled events, entry fees are refunded by the organizer; families should follow its communications for the process. Check the SSRT website regularly for news and updates before traveling.

A workable plan does not need to fill every hour. Leave room to regroup, check equipment, and enjoy being somewhere new while keeping the athlete’s race commitments clear.
